Frequently Asked Questions

The monthly cost to sponsor a boy is $50 CAN.  The money will provide all that is necessary to ensure a healthy, safe, fun lifestyle in a safe surrounding.
Yes, and it is encouraged, as often as you like.  Exchanging letters is a great way to keep in touch.  With the internet, it is even easier to correspond and share pictures.  There is a likelihood that your sponsored child will not know English, so translating letters will be a part of that process.  Quarterly newsletters will keep you informed of the events and happenings at Son of Africa as well, and you can be assured that at least twice a year you will receive a letter or picture from your sponsored child.
Certainly.  Contact Son of Africa through email to discuss and make arrangements.  We welcome you to our home. We have volunteer openings as well. For more information please visit our page on Volunteer Tourism
Yes, although keep in mind that mail is not always reliable so it is a good idea to not send expensive gifts, or money.  If you would your child to receive an additional monetary gift for a special occasion, we can make arrangements.  Please contact son of Africa at lori@sonofafricasociety.com. Ideas of gifts will be included in your sponsored child information package.
The boys at Son of Africa generally will be between the ages of 5 and 15.  Once a child has sponsorship, they will remain in the home until they are 18, or until they wish to be reunited with their family (if possible).  In the chance that your sponsor child does not stay with Son of Africa, you will be notified and at that time given the opportunity to sponsor a different child if you wish.
Things happen sometimes that are out of our control.  In the event that you are unable to continue with sponsorship, be assured that we will do our best to make things work, and in the event that you discontinue sponsorship, we will do everything in our power to find another sponsor for your child so he can remain in the home.  Son of Africa also has a donation section where donations can be made if monthly sponsorship is not a good option.  See our Donate page.  Please contact us at lori@sonofafricasociety.com to discuss cancellation of your sponsorship.
Definitely, we have a Volunteer tourism section where you can find all the information you need.  Volunteering is a great way to spend time at the home and with your sponsored child.  Even if you do not have a sponsored child, you are welcome to come through the Volunteer tourism.  Not only is it a great way to help Son of Africa, but also a safe way to get to experience Senegal and all its beauty and traditions.
Son of Africa is a registered Society but does not at this time have charitable status.
Once you have sponsored your child, you will receive and electronic information package that will contain all the information you will need, as well as additional information about your sponsored child.
Son of Africa can be reached through email at lori@sonofafricasociety.com.  In the event that you wish to speak directly with us, you may contact us by phone.  Keep in mind that phone calls are expensive and there is not always someone available to answer phone calls.  The time difference may also be a factor depending where you are located.  The best option would be to arrange a date and time through email when you could be assured someone is available.
